The term pantheon can mean one of several things:

  • A general term for group of gods or god-beings,
  • The current pantheon of the fourth age, specifically, or
  • A previous pantheon
  • The 'pantheon' building, a multi-temple present in many cities

For the nature and functioning of gods as creatures and beings, see the gods page.

Previous Pantheons

Pantheon of the First Age/The First Pantheon/The Gods at Creation

Purely mythical, literally nothing is known about these beings, whether they were creators or created by another, not even whether they had physical form.

Pantheon of the Second Age/The Broken Pantheon/The Gods Sundered

Names and specifics lost to legend, these were disparate, rival gods who fought each other to destruction. Most of them were destroyed by each other, even the current gods know only fragments of their history.

Pantheon of the Third Age/The Mortal Pantheon/The Gods Past

Mortals who rose from champions of the good gods to deities themselves. They defeated the antagonists of the third age, restored civilisation, and created the fourth pantheon as their successors. Their names and details known only to the gods today, the scholar today can still catch a glimpse of their titles and domains. See The Gods Passed.

Pantheon of the Fourth Age/The Designed Pantheon/The Throned Ones

The pantheon of the fourth age was designed and appointed by their predecessors before they left the world. The pantheon consists of twelve Throned Ones, and a miscellany of lessser beings.

The Throned Ones

Each of the throned ones was designed by a mortal-god of the third age to uphold and protect a particular aspect of civilisation. Although the Throned Ones do not always like each other (they are inherently very different in nature to one another), they are more or less unified and have never once fought one another.
